DIY Starting Point ("the Site," "we," "us") provides general educational information about a limited set of beginner-level home improvement tasks. By using this Site — including its guides and its chat assistant — you agree to the terms below.

1. Educational information only, not professional advice

Nothing on this Site is professional contracting, plumbing, engineering, legal, or safety advice. The guides are general information synthesized from publicly available sources for a typical beginner scenario. Your home, materials, local climate, and code requirements may differ, and no guide can account for every situation. Always use your own judgment, inspect your specific situation, and stop and consult a licensed professional if anything looks, feels, or smells different from what a guide describes.

2. Scope: what this Site covers, and what it deliberately does not

This Site covers seven categories chosen specifically because a first-timer can typically attempt them without a serious risk of injury or major property damage: Painting, Minor plumbing, Drywall repair, Caulking, Backsplash install, Landscaping, and Flooring.

This Site deliberately does not provide instructions for electrical work, gas work, structural work, roofing, major plumbing (water heaters, main lines, sewer lines), or asbestos/hazardous-material handling. These are excluded because they carry a meaningfully higher risk of injury, fire, shock, gas exposure, or structural failure, and because they are commonly subject to licensing, permitting, and code requirements that vary by jurisdiction. If our chat assistant identifies your question as one of these, it will say so and decline to generate instructions rather than attempt a workaround — this is a deliberate design choice, not a bug.

3. Assumption of risk

Even within the categories this Site covers, home improvement work carries inherent risks, including but not limited to cuts, falls, eye injury, chemical exposure, dust inhalation, and property damage. By choosing to perform any task described on this Site, you voluntarily assume all such risks. Follow the safety warnings in each guide, use proper personal protective equipment, and follow the manufacturer's instructions for any tool, product, or material you use — they take precedence over anything written here if they conflict.

4. Older homes: lead paint, asbestos, and similar hazards

Some guides note hazards that can be present in older building materials — for example, lead paint in homes built before 1978, or asbestos in some pre-1980s joint compound, texture, or flooring adhesive. Where a guide mentions this, it is telling you to test before you sand, scrape, or cut into old material, not certifying that your home is or isn't affected. If a test confirms — or you reasonably suspect — a hazardous material is present, stop and hire a certified professional for that portion of the work. Do not treat any guide's silence on a hazard as confirmation that the hazard doesn't apply to your home.

5. No warranty

Building codes, permit requirements, and licensing rules vary by city, county, and state, and change over time. It is your responsibility to check and comply with local requirements before starting any project, including projects in the categories this Site covers.

8. Chat assistant

The chat assistant uses automated language-model classification to route your question to a guide, to a short generated answer, or to a message declining an out-of-scope request. It can make mistakes, including occasionally answering ambiguous questions with an incomplete assumption or mis-routing an unusual phrasing. It is not a substitute for reading the full guide, for your own judgment, or for a licensed professional's assessment. Conversations may be logged for quality and safety review.

9. Third-party sources

Each guide lists the third-party publishers and sources used as reference material during synthesis. We do not control, endorse, or guarantee the continued accuracy of that third-party content, and links to it are provided for attribution and further reading only.

10. No affiliate relationship (yet)

This Site does not currently use affiliate links or earn commission on any product mentioned in a guide. Tool and material suggestions are generic, not brand endorsements for compensation.

We may update these terms as the Site changes. Continued use of the Site after an update means you accept the revised terms.
